According to a government source, an explosion occurred on Tuesday at a Taliban military base near the airport in Faizabad, the capital of Badakhshan province in northeastern Afghanistan.
A Taliban government official, speaking on condition of anonymity and without providing further details, confirmed that an explosion had indeed occurred at the base.
The origin of this explosion is currently unknown. It could be heard about two kilometers from the airport, residents told AFP.
The area around the explosion site was cordoned off by the Taliban authorities.
The base is close to the small Faizabad airport, which is currently not served by any commercial airlines.
