A train ran over and killed five people during work on the route between Milan and Turin. Two more people were injured last night in the accident that occurred in the municipality of Brandizzo, in northern Italy, which is part of the metropolitan area of Turin. The victims were employees of a company carrying out maintenance work on the line, confirmed the company of the Italian state railway network RFI.
The victims are men aged between 22 and 53. They were caught when a locomotive was transporting several empty carriages from Alexandria to Turin. The accident occurred shortly before midnight. According to initial investigations, the train was traveling at around 160 km/h. How the accident could have happened is now being investigated. The driver, who was in a state of shock, received medical treatment. The condition of the two injured people is worrying. They were taken to the hospital in the city of Chivasso.
Network company RFI said in a press release that maintenance work was carried out by an external contractor. Rail traffic on the Turin – Milan route was interrupted. The accident occurred in the community of Brandizzo, with 9,000 inhabitants, 20 kilometers from Turin.
