Two people died and seven were injured in a knife attack in Germany on Wednesday (January 25). The crime happened on a regional train between Kiel (Schleswig-Holstein) and Hamburg, said a spokesman for the Flensburg police. A police spokesman for the neighboring town of Itzehoe added that three of the seven injured were serious.
The alleged perpetrator who was said to be between 20 and 30 years old, was arrested at Brokstedt train station, a town about forty miles from Hamburg. where the regional train was shut down. Police said he was also injured. “Witnesses managed to calm the suspect down until the police arrived in Brokstedt,” he said in a press release. The motive for the attack has not yet been determined, according to police.
According to photos released by the daily Bild, a large number of police vehicles and ambulances were deployed around the station. Deutsche Bahn has announced that trains on main routes are canceled.
“The deed in the regional train between Kiel and Hamburg shakes me deeply,” said Interior Minister Sabine Sütterlin-Waack, denouncing a “terrible act against all humanity”.
