The world of work is currently undergoing unprecedented change due to new technologies, globalization, human mobility and demographic trends. These changes have the potential to restructure the labor markets and livelihoods of billions of people. While they offer exciting opportunities to increase productivity and innovation, they also pose challenges for workers and policymakers.
Members of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and experts on labor markets and technological progress will meet at the special session of ECOSOC 2024 in Santiago de Chile to discuss the future direction of decent work.
This two-day special meeting will include plenary sessions, interactive panels, a side event commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and a special event celebrating the legacy of Mr. Hernán Santa Cruz, one of the first drafters the declaration.
The outcome of the special session will be a summary of the ECOSOC Presidency, which will serve as input to the 2024 High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), the Future Summit and the World Social Summit proposed for 2025.
