“Anything short of an indeterminate prison sentence will not protect the public from the defendant committing murder or [blessure sérieuse]», Resolute Judge Flavia K. Longo at the Montreal courthouse.

The judge ruled this month in favor of a Crown request to impose such a sentence and declare Nakiba Adams a dangerous offender.

According to the provisions of the Criminal Code, the 40-year-old man’s profile will therefore be re-evaluated by the Parole Board of Canada after seven years in prison.

The same exercise is then repeated every two years.

In that case, Adams was convicted of assault and aggravated assault on his grandparents during an altercation in October 2019.

Severe injury

When he arrived at their home, Nakiba Adams’ grandmother told him he was not welcome. Tensions between the defendant and the octogenarian couple quickly escalated.

At one point, “her grandmother held her arms back [de l’accusé]“while his grandfather lunged at him and attempted to punch him in the face,” the ruling states.

After recovering from a fall, Adams violently punched both victims in the face, knocking them to the ground. The man and woman, who were 83 and 81 at the time, suffered serious injuries, including facial fractures.

“Even though he is her grandson, [la dame] fears him. The bump that appeared on his head after the incident is still there and will remain that way. It is a constant reminder of what happened that day,” the ruling says.

Dozens of convictions

Nakiba Adams is far from being in trouble with the law for the first time. Since 2004, the man who describes himself as a professional athlete has amassed more than thirty convictions.

Adams’ crimes range from threats, assault with a weapon, assault, terms and conditions violations, burglary and obstruction of justice.

We also note that in May 2021 he stabbed a correctional officer with a pencil, causing injuries to his face and eye.

Explosive temper

The Montrealer, who grew up in a violent family environment, is also said to have committed more than 74 disciplinary offenses in prison between 2019 and 2022.

According to a probation officer who assessed Adams’ risk of reoffending and his needs, the offender has anger issues and blames his victims.

“[L]“The defendant’s inability to control his emotions and contain his explosiveness is self-evident since he responded to his grandparents with extreme violence and showed indifference to the somewhat foreseeable consequences of his actions, which caused them permanent injuries,” the court said .
