Horror storm in Spain, one year old girl killed by 10cm hailstone: 29 others injured

A one-year-old girl died after being hit by a giant 10cm hailstone during a terrible storm that ravaged Spain. The 20-month-old was one of 30 injured after being hit by huge hailstones that fell on the Catalan town of La Bisbal de l’Emporda. The little girl, who was taken to the Josep Trueta Hospital in Girona on Tuesday afternoon, died a few hours later. It is not yet known what nationality was the child who died and where he was exactly when he was hit by the hailstones that killed him.

A woman was also rushed to the same hospital as the child on Wednesday after sustaining injuries following the intense hailstorm. The effects of the bad weather were devastating, as reported by international newspapers. Most of the other 28 people affected by the giant grains of ice had to have stitches and casts after suffering head injuries and lacerations all over their bodies, as well as broken bones on the affected limbs.

The grains were huge and have been likened to stones the size of a tennis ball. Catalonian meteorologists said the hailstones that have fallen in the area near the tourist town of Girona, close to Spain’s border with France, were the largest in the last twenty years. The cars were also damaged by the storm.

The most devastating hailstorms in history

The deadliest hailstorm in history occurred in the Indian city of Moradabad in 1888, killing 250 people after being struck by grains of ice the size of oranges. The record for the world’s largest hailstone is that which fell in Vivian, South Dakota, in 2010. It weighed about 878 grams and was almost eight inches in diameter, which is over 21 cm.

Alberto Balocco, the industrial king of panettone, was struck by lightning while riding a bicycle. A friend also died. Found in the mountains of Turin

The weather situation

As a holiday destination, Spain will be hit by a devastating wave of bad weather in these twists and turns of the summer of 2022. Traveling tourists were warned earlier this month they could be hit by rare Mediterranean hurricanes. Experts say the risk of tropical cyclones called Medicanes has risen due to this year’s intense heat hitting Britain’s top tourist destination, while rising sea temperatures are being blamed on global warming. Oceanographer and meteorologist Yurima Celdran said, as we read in the Mirror: “Sea temperatures should be warmer than normal this autumn and given the necessary atmospheric conditions it would not be unreasonable to think that the Mediterranean could host a medicane this year “.
