Vaccination protects against infection by Human papillomavirus (HPV). This can trigger several types of cancer, especially Cervical cancer. 400 to 500 women suffer from this every year.
Scientific studies show that HPV is responsible for 90%. Other cancers in the middle of the throat and genitals are also caused by HP viruses. They affect both men and women.

Since February 1, 2023, HPV vaccination has been available free of charge for ages 9 to 21. The number of vaccinations has almost doubled since then: in the electronic vaccination certificate around 106,000 vaccinations documented. In the comparable period of the previous year, almost 56 thousand vaccinations were registered. Until the end of 2025 it will be free until the age of 30.
Decisions to expand the public vaccination program by the federal, state and social security systems should be taken in April. As part of health care reform, there are annual 90 million euros additionally available for the public vaccination program.
