Answer

Hello Patrick,

The Buicks of recent years are, so to speak, derived from other GM models, but offer brand-specific attributes. I'm thinking of, among other things Verano, a Chevrolet Cruze with a nicer design and a more elegant interior. As for them Buick LaCrosseit is similar in that it shared its engines with the Chevrolet Impala but shared the platform of other models such as the Cadillac XTS.

The other car of that time was the Buick Regal which shared its components with the Opel Insignia sold in Europe. It is a car with a very European appearance and an absolutely charming style. Finally, there is the Buick Encore, this small subcompact SUV that can meet your expectations and is derived from the Chevrolet Trax.

Unfortunately, the reliability of most of these models was rather uncertain. The worst of all is probably the shelf, given its European focus and the complexity involved. In the first few years there were the most problems with mechanics and electronics. The Buick Verano didn't have it easy either, especially in the first few years of marketing. Engine problems have been reported, as well as all sorts of problems with the suspension, steering, etc. Still, it was less problematic than the first generation Chevrolet Cruze from which it was derived, which used small turbocharged engines that had some problems.

Buy something?

The availability of Buick models varies greatly. It is very difficult to find a Buick LaCrosse or a Buick Regal as these models were only sold in small numbers at the time. The Buick Verano is a little easier to find than other cars, and it is possible to find a 2015 or 2016 model that fits the budget you have in mind. This would be my choice in this price range and brand as most of this model's initial problems were fixed towards the end of the generation which ended in 2017.

However, the most commonly available model remains the Encore. Your budget allows access to 2014 or 2015 models, not overly equipped. However, the reliability is not outstanding and the rather compact format does not contribute to comfort in everyday life. I prefer the Verano for its space and comfort, even if it's hard to find. This would be my choice if you really want to stick with Buick.

Other options?

Given your budget and especially the comfort criterion, in my opinion the best choice would be to find a more common compact or mid-size sedan, but less popular with the public, which lowers its price. I'm thinking, among other things, of a Subaru Imprezaor even one Subaru Legacy, two relatively uneventful models that offer good reliability. The Legacy is more comfortable, but also larger.
