Israel: Arabs violently attacked while driving on Yom Kippur i24 i24 English

Most roads in the country are car-free on Yom Kippur, as is the national tradition

Five men traveling in the coastal town of Bat Yam on Yom Kippur were attacked by a mob Tuesday night and their vehicle overturned.

According to Israeli media, the driver and passengers were all Arabs and came from the south of the country.

Police were called to the scene, removed one of the men from the crowd and took him to the local police station before taking him to hospital for treatment.

Two other men in the group were able to escape after being injured. The other two escaped unharmed.

According to news site Walla, the attackers claimed the men came into the city deliberately to disturb the calm on Yom Kippur, when most streets are car-free that day, as dictated by national tradition.

This is not the first time the city of Bat Yam has witnessed intercommunal violence. In May 2021, an Arab driver was lynched there during Israel’s Operation Guardian of the Wall in the Gaza Strip.

At least 10 people had been charged in the incident.
