Jo Koy, reflecting on the negative reviews of his first hosting gig at the 2024 Golden Globes, tells GMA3 that the criticism hurts and that he understands the backlash over the now-infamous Taylor Swift joke.
While he insisted he had fun last night, a candid Koy admitted it was “a tough room”, a “tough job” and a “tough, tough gig”.
“I would be lying if [I said] it doesn’t hurt,” Koy said. “I had a little moment where I was like, 'Ahh.' Hosting is just a hard job. Yes, I am a stand-up comedian, but this hosting position is a different style. I kind of went in and did all the writing… We only had 10 days to write this monologue. It was a crash course. I feel bad, but hey, I still have to say I loved what I did.”
“I had fun. You know, it was a moment I'll always remember,” a seemingly disheartened Koy said the day after the Globes.
When asked about a particularly rough moment, Koy immediately stated the obvious.
“I think this was when the Taylor model was still a little flat,” he said. “It was a strange joke, I think. But it was more about the NFL. I tried to use cutaways to make fun of the NFL and how the Globes didn't have to do that. So it was more of a dig at the NFL. But it just didn’t come across that way.”
The biggest upset of the night came when Koy said: “As you know, we came on after a double game in football. The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? We have less camera footage of Taylor Swift at the Golden Globes.”
After the joke, the camera switched to Swift in the audience, and the Eras Tour singer was seen with a blank expression on her face as she took a sip of her Moet & Chandon.
Koy reviewed his own performance at the Globes, saying, “I wanted to give a little more of myself, but I just felt like I came up a little short. That's all.”
