Jose Marti the hero in the middle of the world

José Martí, the hero in the middle of the world

A few meters from the equinoctial line that bisects the planet’s hemispheres, shrouded in a halo of curiosity and mystery, stands a sculpture dedicated to the most universal of Cubans.

There, around 20 kilometers north of Quito, at more than 2,500 meters above sea level, right in the middle is the homage to a man with high principles, an inter-American and internationalist vocation.

Very close to the main monument, which marks the latitude 0°0’0″, is the sculptural work of the Cuban Andrés González, who placed two intertwined hands as a symbol of Martí’s dream of integration.

Martí integrador called the artist to this set that was built in such a representative place.

It was the apostle of the Caribbean nation who, according to many, knew how to divine the continental importance of the peoples of Our America.

That is why he is revered at the center of the earth, and there one of his many phrases stands out, demonstrating his view of the region: “The world should be grafted onto our republics: but the stem must be that of our republics. ”

This is how it has appeared since the 2000s in Ecuador’s most visited tourist attraction, with an expression that becomes valid every day to recall the importance of sovereignty in the countries of the continent.
