Mexico City: A strong earthquake measuring 7.6 hits the capital and the west of the country

A powerful earthquake struck Mexico’s west coast on Monday and was felt as far away as the capital, Mexico City, as residents rushed to the streets to seek shelter.

The earthquake, measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale, was felt just after 1 p.m. on the same day as the deadly 1985 and 2017 earthquakes, according to the US Geological Watch Institute (USGS), adding to the panic.

The 1985 earthquake killed thousands and caused major damage in Mexico City, while the 2017 earthquake killed around 350 people.

The mayor of the capital, Claudia Sheinbaum, indicated that no damage has yet been reported after the earthquake, which had its epicenter in front of La Placita de Morelos, at a depth of about 15 km.

A tsunami warning has been issued in western Mexico, particularly along the coasts of the states of Michoacan and Colima. Other Pacific Rim countries are likely to be only slightly affected.
