Since the sexual harassment allegations against producer Harvey Weinstein in 2017, a whistleblowing movement has sprung up on social media using the hashtag #MeToo (#MeToo).
Women from all over the world had the courage to speak out against their sexual abusers.
But in 2004, a woman in Quebec decided to fight her alone against what was then the entertainment industry’s biggest mogul, Guy Cloutier.
By denouncing her attacker, Nathalie Simard inspired thousands of people and laid the foundation for a movement to give survivors their story back.
Denis Lévesque met Nathalie Simard, almost 20 years after their fight that shook the cultural milieu, as part of their special program celebrating the 25th anniversary of LCN.
She told the host that she hopes to continue to inspire women to speak out.
“A touching scene that I witnessed at one of my conferences a few years ago. A grandmother, accompanied by her daughter and granddaughter, came to see me. The grandmother said to me: “Thank you very much. Tonight we decided that enough is enough.” The grandmother had been abused, her daughter and the little girl too, and they had decided to be denounced. Because of moments like this, I tell myself that I did well to go and denounce,” says Nathalie Simard.
