New earthquake in Turkey: one dead, dozens injured

Three weeks after the strong earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, the earth shook again in the Turkish province of Malatya. At least one person died and 69 were injured, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported today.

The earthquake in Malatya province had a magnitude of 5.5, the Kandilli earthquake monitor announced today. According to Kandilli, the epicenter was in the municipality of Yesilyurt.

Malatya province was also hit hard by the violent earthquake on 6 February. Mayor Selahattin Gürkan told broadcaster Habertürk that around 2,300 people had died in Malatya alone. According to official information, more than 44,000 people died in Turkey alone and at least 5,900 people in Syria as a result of the double earthquakes and their aftermath.
