Nohemi, American student killed by Bataclan terrorists: the anti Google lawsuit on her behalf

FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT
PARIS – On the evening of November 13, 2015, Nohemi Gonzalez, 23, met American and French friends at the tables at Carillon, the bar at the intersection of Via Bichat and Via Alibert in east Paris. The daughter of Mexican immigrants from Whittier near Los Angeles, the first in the family to go to college, was about to end her six-month exchange degree in France and was due to return to California in February to study design.

At 9:25 p.m., after the explosions at the Stade de France, the second Islamic State terrorist cell went into action and shot at the boys sitting in front of the bar. A few hours later, her mother Beatrice received the news in her hair salon in Whittier: Nohemi was killed, she is the only American victim of the attacks on the restaurants and the Bataclan.

In the weeks and months that followed, the world tried to understand the nature of the Islamic State, how the organization recruited its soldiers, how children born and raised in Belgium or France could choose to massacre the innocent. Apparently, areas of study included the internet and social media and their clever use first by al Qaeda and then by Isis. An Israeli NGO, Shurat HaDin, which fights terrorism through lawsuits, has suggested Nohemi Gonzalez’s parents sue Google, YouTube’s parent company: The Islamic State is allowed to distribute its propaganda videos on the site, and if the YouTube algorithm then rejects them had come to the fore, Google would have been responsible for the involuntary complicity with the terrorists.

The case, which has been ongoing for years, arrives today before the US Supreme Court, which must rule on the “26 words that form the foundation of the Internet”: ie Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996 statute which prohibits platforms for content created by others are punishable. According to Section 230, YouTube, but also Twitter or Facebook, are not regarded as publishers, but as simple distributors of third-party material.

The lawyers for the Gonzalez family and the NGO Shurat HaDin deny precisely this form of irresponsibility: “The videos consulted on YouTube are the main way in which Isis has received support and new recruits outside the territories of Syria and Iraq”. Therefore, according to the complainants, Section 230 must be repealed or at least amended: sites with billions of users could not limit themselves to banning pornographic content as they do today, but would also have to control other dangerous content such as Islamist propaganda videos.

The petition to the Supreme Court is based on a fundamental aspect: automatic algorithms suggest specific videos based on users’ preferences and what they have seen before. If YouTube, albeit unwittingly, favors certain images over others, it’s difficult to argue that the platform has no editorial function. But Section 230 defenders point out that without this protection, the Internet as we have known it could no longer function. Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, and Jack Dorsey, former head of Twitter, have spoken out in favor of an overhaul in the past, but so far without consequences.

Maybe nobody put it in context, they didn’t tell him what it means in Barranquilla, in the middle of the carnival, Atlético Junior.

The truth is that reggaeton artist Don Omar felt very out of place after a concert he was in the news at, and it wasn’t exactly because of his hit songs.

[]

In the middle of his presentation, in a concert with Alfa, Rey Ruiz, Sergio Vargas and Jorge Celedón, among others, he suddenly became persona non grata.

It turned out that someone from where the audience was threw Junior’s shirt, Juanfer Quintero’s number 10, and the singer, after looking at it with little interest, simply threw it back into the audience.

Is it because they didn’t win the league in 2023? Isn’t he a big fan of Arturo Reyes? Will he become a Union fan? There are no satisfactory answers to this reaction, which showed no mercy to Junior’s fans.

Embarrassing: Bahn ordered 31 trains that don’t fit in the tunnel

The president of the Spanish state railway company Renfe and a member of the government fell into an embarrassing affair. The railroad ordered 31 trains worth a total of 258 million euros, too large for some of the tunnels in the intended area of operation in the north of the country.

About three weeks after the scandal was discovered, Renfe president Isaías Táboas resigned on Monday, state television broadcaster RTVE reported. The Secretary of State for the Ministry of Transport, Isabel Pardo, has also made her position available.

two years late

Transport Minister Raquel Sánchez accepted both resignations, she said, citing the Madrid government. According to the authorities, the error will lead to a delay in the commissioning of the new trains by at least two years until 2026. The prime ministers of the affected regions of Cantabria and Asturias wanted to meet with Sánchez in Madrid late Monday afternoon to negotiate financial compensation.

Although the request had already been made in 2020, the Spanish train disaster only came to light at the end of January through a report by the regional newspaper El Comercio. The central government has already admitted the error, but stated that the taxpayer did not suffer any financial loss because the trains, which were very wide, had not yet been built. After several warnings, the entire production process ended up being stopped. Madrid published the new order for transport manufacturer CAF on Saturday.

network renewal

The new trains are intended to replace the outdated fleet in regions that are not as well connected to the national rail network. The rail network in Cantabria and Asturias dates mainly from the 19th century and runs through a mountainous landscape. The tunnels in the two regions still have different dimensions, which do not always correspond to modern railway standards in Spain.

Deeply challenged by the climate crisis, the two graduates wanted to create a unique creation on the subject. Pandore was thus further developed on her way to a master’s degree in digital creation. This installation encompasses multiple media ranging from interactive technological devices to cathode ray screens, including projection and a sonic and immersive experience. Pandore offers a reflection on both the issues surrounding the climate crisis and the insidious problems of misinformation.

For the occasion, the Pandore project will be housed in the premises of the UQAM’s Atelier de chronotopies urbaines, a research center dedicated to the documentation and dissemination of popular cultures and their impact on the city. The presentation of Pandore as part of this major cultural event is part of the concern of the teaching and research center for creation and new media to promote the talent and creativity of their students outside their walls.

“In Greek mythology, Pandora is the one who ignored the warnings and who unleashed all the ills of mankind on earth, like the human who, despite the repeated warnings of the scientific community, caused the ecological crisis. Here, digital creation allows us to combine technology, science and poetry to create an experience that makes an impact and inspires engagement,” explains student Jeanne Lebigre. Remember that a first version of Pandora was presented at the Rouyn-Noranda Art Museum last April.

Covid19 vaccines are effective in patients with blood cancer

A German study published in the journal Nature Cancer found that Covid19 vaccines are effective in people with blood cancer. Vaccination offers protection against severe forms of the disease, the survey found, even in those patients who are receiving aggressive drugs that weaken the immune system.

A total of 60 patients with two types of blood cancer Bcell lymphoma and multiple myeloma were followed up by researchers studying immune responses after these individuals received three doses of vaccines against SARSCoV2. The approach was larger than previous research and didn’t just focus on the amount of antibodies directed against the virus’s spike protein in the bloodstream of these individuals.

The results are promising. By modifying the analysis methodology, the researchers discovered that another type of immune cell, T lymphocytes with immune functions to bring about antiviral responses, either through cytokine production or active elimination of infected cells can be activated after vaccination and provide protection, even in patients with blood cancer that produce small amounts of antibodies.

“Almost all volunteers had a strong Tcell response to the Covid19 vaccination,” said Andrea KepplerHafkemeyer from the University Hospital Freiburg in Germany. “In addition, they produced antibodies of higher quality than in healthy people,” adds the researcher and first author of the study.

According to the specialist, Tcells act to ward off infections caused by various microorganisms, including the coronavirus, and manage to neutralize both the original strain and several variants, including omicron BA.1.

During the study period, some patients tested positive for Covid19 but had only mild or moderate symptoms, underscoring the importance and effectiveness of vaccination in this population.

“Multiple doses of vaccine can be recommended for patients with Bcell lymphoma or multiple myeloma without interrupting cancer therapy,” said Oliver T. Keppler, professor at the University of Munich and one of the coauthors of the study. According to him, vaccines in patients with various types of cancer provide an excellent immune response against the disease and generate strong antibodies. “People with blood cancer can and should get vaccinated to avoid complications from Covid19,” concluded the expert.

And so Bertone reacted in an interview TV talk: “I was very upset and said it many times. At this point, I hope that in 2024 there will be five women with five great songs.” In short, Bortone certainly did not spare Amadeus this result, which pushed aside the fair sex in Sanremo from the culprits. In fact, the final ranking takes into account the televoting, the vote of the press room and the vote of the opinion poll jury Nobody could predict 5 men in the first 5 positions…
