Two of the six people killed in a horror car crash in Nebraska alerted to authorities by an iPhone 14 have been identified.

Nick Bisesi, 22, and Jonathan Koch, 22, both died in the early hours of Sunday when the Honda Accord they were traveling in crashed into a tree at 2.15am.

It is unclear whether alcohol was involved in the accident or whether the driver was speeding.

The police are continuing to investigate the accident.

Four of the victims remain publicly unidentified while police work to notify their families.

The iPhone 14 introduced a new “Crash Detection” feature that automatically detects when the user has been involved in a serious car accident and calls emergency help if they are unconscious or can’t reach their phone.

Apple’s latest iPhone models feature a dual-core accelerometer – capable of detecting G-force measurements up to 256 Gs – and a new high dynamic range gyroscope.

These are used in combination with components in previous iPhone models, such as the barometer, which can detect changes in cabin pressure, the GPS for additional input for changes in speed, and the microphone, which can detect loud noises typical of serious car accidents.

Apple has trained its algorithms on over a million hours of real-world driving and accident log data to accurately identify when an accident occurred.

If the user is wearing an Apple Watch, this further improves accuracy.

When a major accident is detected, the emergency services call interface will appear on the Apple Watch as it is most likely to be in close proximity to the user, while the call is made through the iPhone when it is within range for the best possible connection.

Among them are three other young men and a woman who survived the initial effects of the crash but later died in hospital from their injuries.

Bisei was a sophomore majoring in advertising and public relations at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

In 2024 he should do his Abitur. Koch had graduated from high school and until recently worked in human resources.

It’s unclear if they lived together, but it’s believed the group were driving home together from a night when their vehicle – designed for just five people – was plowed into the tree.

Before neighbors came out of their house to help, emergency services were alerted by an iPhone 14 in the car.

The latest model detects a high-impact impact and immediately alerts authorities.

When the neighbors came out of their houses, the vehicle was on fire.

Brad Bartak, who lives on the street where the accident happened, told local outlet WOWT: “I noticed that there was indeed a fire coming out of the engine… I basically took the garden hose and ran it to the car, and we were dousing it.’

Honors poured out for Koch from those who gathered there.

Jonathan’s sister Kayla Kelley said: “Life is so short. In the blink of an eye, the world around you collapses.’

She added: “He was the most amazing person you would ever meet.”

She described her brother as a man who loved his family, drew and went out and spent time with his friends. He is charismatic and doesn’t know strangers, she said.

Kelley later posted a tribute to her brother on Facebook: “While I sit in your bedroom and muster enough strength to write something so beautiful for you, nothing I say will bring you back or show the whole universe how amazing you are are you!

“My heart and family are broken into a million pieces! We are all devastated, our whole world exploded like a bomb in the blink of an eye,” she wrote.

Kaleigh Keown, another of Koch’s sisters, changed her Facebook profile picture to a photo of her and her brother wearing Nebraska Cornhuskers football jerseys.

Though the cause of the crash is still under investigation, police explained how they were called after the iPhone realized it was in a crash and automatically called first responders if the user didn’t respond.

“This is the worst accident in Lincoln in recent memory,” said Lincoln Deputy Police Commissioner Michon Morrow.

“We tried to think of another accident as bad as this and we couldn’t think of anything.”

“I’ve been in this department for 25 years and I can’t remember anything that terrible.

“The cause of this accident will take time,” Morrow added.

“We look at all possibilities, including alcohol, speed or distracted driving.”
