Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to announce in November that he will run in the 2024 Russian presidential election. The information was published this Tuesday by the Kommersant newspaper (3), citing sources close to the government.

The announcement is expected to be made at a conference scheduled for next month. According to the newspaper, which is one of Russia’s largest newspapers, Putin is considering other scenarios before making a final decision.

The presidential elections in Russia are scheduled to take place in March 2024. If Putin runs and is elected, he could remain in power until at least 2030.

Putin has been in power for more than 20 years. He became president in 1999, temporarily replacing Boris Yeltsin. He was effectively elected to office in 2000 and reelected in 2004.

When he was unable to run for president in 2008, he supported the winner, Dmitry Medvedev, and was eventually appointed prime minister.

In 2012, Putin returned to the presidency and was reelected to a sixyear term in 2018. In 2021, the Russian parliament passed a law allowing the current president to run in the 2024 and 2030 elections.

Diplomats, spies and authorities believe Putin should remain in power as long as he is alive.

Last month, the Russian president said he should announce his plans after parliament calls presidential elections which by law would not take place until December.

The Kremlin spokesman said in September that no one would be able to compete with him if Putin decided to run.
