QB Jaden Rashada signs after his release from Florida

Jaden Rashada, the nation’s top untied quarterback, signed for Arizona State on Wednesday. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Rashada, who played at Pittsburg (California) High School, is ranked 82nd overall and the No. 7 quarterback in the Class of 2023 on the 247Sports Composite.
  • He originally signed for Miami but switched to Florida in early November and signed a letter of intent with the Gators in December. He asked for his release in January after a falling out with Florida’s independent collective.
  • He held talks with TCU, Cal and Washington, among others, before deciding to play for Arizona State coach and first-year Kenny Dillingham.

The Athletic’s instant analysis:

What does this mean for the state of Arizona?

All eyes have been on Rashada since he asked Florida to be released from its national memorandum of understanding. After a long, dramatic recruiting process, Rashada made a relatively quick decision and ended up in Arizona State, where his father played Harlen Rashada.

Dillingham promised a vision to bring the Sun Devils back to prominence, with a primary focus on retaking Arizona State. But some lucky breaks – NIL Confusion in Florida – allowed him to capitalize late in the process and land a top-100 quarterback. They don’t ask how it happens – they ask for results. Dillingham’s results are pretty good. – Aquarius

Does Rashada have a chance to start in 2023?

Arizona State’s QB room is standing room only. Trenton Bourguet, who started five games last season and completed 71 percent of his passes, is making a return. Dillingham also signed Notre Dame’s Drew Pyne and BYU’s Jacob Conover. Pyne threw for 2,031 yards last season for a struggling Irish team that finished 9-4 while Conover played sparingly in two seasons. In all, the Sun Devils have six (!) grantee quarterbacks, but it’s hard to say how that will play out. Rashada should get a strong look. Weighing 6-4 and 175 pounds, he’ll remind fans of former Arizona State quarterback Jayden Daniels, but Rashada can throw the ball better. That could be an interesting battle for positions. – Hall
