Roberto Irineu Marinho mourns Jô Soares: “One of the most brilliant figures in our culture”

Roberto Irineu Marinho, VicePresident of Grupo Globo, lamented the death of Jô Soares:

“Today we lost one of the most brilliant figures in our culture. Jô Soares started at Globo in the early 70’s and helped write not only our history but also that of Brazilian television. He was an actor, producer, director, author, writer, painter, but above all he was a master a master at the art of reading and interpreting Brazilians and Brazilians and making them laugh with his grace, intelligence and elegance.

“His comedy shows chronicled our history with its more than 200 characters who were also part of the family of several generations. Brazil and the world sat on the Programa do Jô sofa. Jô was a complete artist. I met Jô in the 70s and we always talked. In addition to exchanging affection, we also exchanged rare diseases, like two good hypochondriacs. I say goodbye to him with regret and, to repeat my father when he was interviewed by him, I can proudly say, that we work together. Culture, history, television, Brazil, we all, Jô, will miss you. Viva o Gordo!”

The presenter, comedian, actor and author Jô Soares died this Friday (5) at 2.30 a.m. at the age of 84. The host of “Programa do Jô,” which aired on TV Globo from 2000 to 2016 and is considered one of Brazil’s greatest comedians, has been hospitalized since July 28 at the SírioLibanês Hospital in the central region of São Paulo.

The cause of death was not disclosed. The funeral and wake will be reserved for family and friends at a date and location not yet announced. The death was announced by Flávia Pedra, Jô’s exwife, and confirmed in a statement from the Press Office of SírioLibanês Hospital.

“You are proud of everyone who has shared life with you in any way. I thank the lords of time and space for giving me the good fortune to intersect our lives. Thank you for the asthmatic laughs, for our homes my way, the excursions to the fanciest and most mequetrefese places, for the multitude of films that you thought was lucky I didn’t remember to watch them again see, and for the indecent amount of ice cream we saw,” wrote Flávia on a social network.

In all his numerous artistic activities interviewer, actor, writer, playwright, director, screenwriter, painter… Jô Soares had humor as his trademark. It was his starting point and his signature in theatre, television, cinema, visual arts and literature. He gladly admitted it himself.

“Everything I’ve done, everything I do, has always been based on humor. I’ve always had it since I was born,” he said in a statement to website Memória Globo.

Over the past 25 years, Jô has become known as the country’s most famous talk show host. On TV Globo he starred in “Programa do Jô” which aired from 2000 to 2016.

A pioneer of standup, he is also considered one of the most important comedians in the history of Brazil, taking part in television historymaking attractions such as “A Família Trapo” (1966), “Planeta dos Homens” (1977) and ” Long live the fat man” (1981). He has also written books and acted in 22 films.
