Ramallah. At least seven Palestinians have died in Israeli prisons since the current spiral of violence in the occupied territories began on October 7, two sources close to the prisoners reported today.
The Prisoners' and Ex-Prisoners' Affairs Commission and the Prisoners Club reported the death of 23-year-old Abdul Rahman Bassem Al-Bahsh at the Megiddo Prison Center.
In a joint statement, both institutions condemned the new crime and condemned the rape and torture to which Palestinian prisoners are subjected.
They emphasized that Israel's brutality against our people did not begin on October 7, but only got worse.
In this context, they recalled that months earlier, right-wing Israeli lawmakers had supported draft laws to sentence Palestinian prisoners to the death penalty.
They also called on international human rights institutions, the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross to take decisive action against these crimes.
Last November, several Palestinians released as part of an exchange between the Hamas militia and Israel complained about the torture they were subjected to in prisons.
Members of the prison service constantly break into the cells and beat the prisoners, young Mohammed Nazzal told Al Jazeera television.
Just before they left, they entered the area where I was and started beating us with sticks. I put my hands on my head to avoid the blows, which caused damage to my limbs, he said.
“I was detained for almost a year, but I haven't seen what happened since October 7,” agreed Jawad Kamil, 17, one of the released youths.
The repressive forces enter the prisoners' sections and begin to beat them; The goal is to kill them, he explained.
Marah Bakir, who was arrested in 2015 and sentenced to eight and a half years in prison, made similar comments.
They had isolated me in prison since the beginning of the conflict in Gaza, beat me repeatedly and tried to take off my hijab (scarf that Muslim women use to cover their heads) while I was chained, she said.
