A gunman killed six people, including his exwife, this Friday (17) in a small town in rural Mississippi, United States.

The attack occurred in the township of Arkabutla, in northern Tate County. About 300 people live in the region.

Tate County Sheriff Brad Lance said the killer was 51yearold Richard Dale Crum. He shot dead his exwife and five others in three different locations before being arrested.

Investigators are yet to determine the motive for the attack and are investigating the suspect’s relationship with his exwife.

Mississippi Department of Public Safety spokesman Bailey Martin confirmed the deaths. Gov. Tate Reeves’ office said it had been briefed on the attack and was awaiting further details.

According to the police, the shooter first broke into a supermarket at a gas station and killed a man there. He then broke into a house and shot his exwife, who also died. He proceeded to another home where he claimed four more victims: two dead inside the residence and two others outside the property.

A police officer saw a car matching the description of the characteristics reported by witnesses and attempted to stop it. The driver did not obey the order and a chase ensued.

The shooter pulled into the driveway of an apartment building and was arrested on the spot.

Officers recovered a shotgun and two handguns from the suspect, Lance said.
