Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitaries agreed this Friday (21) on a 72hour ceasefire in armed clashes in Sudan on humanitarian grounds. The suspension of conflicts was to begin at 6:00 a.m. local time (1:00 a.m. in Brasilia).

In a statement, the paramilitary group said the ceasefire would be concluded for the opening of humanitarian corridors and the departure of people from the region. On the other hand, the Sudanese army did not comment on the ceasefire.

Clashes in Sudan had a major impact on Saturday (15th) and began after a split between the army and paramilitaries.

In October 2021, the two groups came together to stage a coup that removed civilians from power. Now the army and the RSF are fighting for control of the country.

Although Sudan has a history of internal conflicts, the capital Khartoum has always been spared and lived in relative peace. This time, however, the city became the center of the clashes.

Prior to this Friday’s ceasefire, other ceasefires were announced but were broken. More than 300 people have died and another 3,000 have been injured since Saturday.
