Syria: Israel bombs airport in Aleppo, Syria

According to Syrian sources, Israel repeatedly bombed the airport in the city of Aleppo on Wednesday. The “Israeli enemy” fired rockets at the airport around 8pm (local time) and caused “damage to property”, state-run news agency Sana wrote. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, “four Israeli missiles” were fired at the runway and warehouses near the airport where the Iranian missiles were said to be located.

According to the non-governmental organization (NGO), the rockets caused fires and explosions. The UK-based observatory pulls its information from a network of local whistleblowers. The information provided by the organization is often difficult to verify by an independent party.

The observatory did not record any injuries or deaths. According to the SANA news agency, about an hour after the attacks on Aleppo airport, Syrian air defense intercepted “enemy” missiles over the capital Damascus. According to state television, the bullets were Israeli.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the Israeli air force bombed several Iranian militia positions near the central Syrian city of Hama and the western coastal city of Tartus last Thursday. There were also fatalities. The state news agency Sana had written about two injured civilians. The Human Rights Watch is based in Britain and its information is difficult to verify.

Since civil war erupted in Syria in 2011, Israel has carried out hundreds of air strikes against targets in Syria. They were directed against Syrian army positions, Iranian troops or the Lebanese Hezbollah militia, which, like Iran, is allied with Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad.

Israel rarely specifically comments on its air strikes in Syria. However, Israel has repeatedly emphasized that it will not allow Iran to extend its influence to Israel’s borders.
