Tennis: Excellent start for Eugenie Bouchard

Quebec’s Eugenie Bouchard gave herself a healthy dose of confidence by putting on a convincing performance in the first qualifying round of the United States Open tennis tournament in New York on Tuesday, beating America’s Katherine Hui 6-2, 6-3.

Against an 18-year-old rival, the winner didn’t skimp on the pitch, taking just 74 minutes to extend her stay in the Big Apple. It has to be said that Hui facilitated his task with seven double faults that led to six breaks from Bouchard.

“Genie”, who is ranked 216th in the WTA tournament, will face Brazilian Laura Pigossi or Slovenian Kaja Juvan in the next round.

Additionally, Canada’s Katherine Sebov lost her flag in the opening round of the pre-tournament stage. Belgian Yanina Wickmayer, seeded third in qualifying, showed her the way out with a 6-7(3), 7-5, 6-2 win.
