“The government should not vote against child protection and environmental standards in Brussels”

Blue-black in Austria united alongside corporations – the Greens must increase pressure on the ÖVP

Vienna (OTS/SK) – SPÖ's European spokesperson Jörg Leichtfried today reiterated the SPÖ's demand that Austria agree to the outcome of negotiations on the EU-level supply chain law. “This is probably the last opportunity to take this important step in the fight against child labor, forced labor and environmental crimes before the EU elections in June. I hope that the Greens in government will exert adequate pressure on the coalition partner ÖVP.” The planned directive is intended to hold companies accountable for child labor, forced labor and worker exploitation, as well as environmental pollution in their supply chains. “And here the ÖVP and FPÖ are against it – they are on the side of the companies and not the people”, criticizes Leichtfried. ****

Opponents of the directive also claim that the supply chain law would be a burden on national companies. “99.6 percent of Austrian companies are SMEs that are not covered by this. On the other hand, the EU's supply chain law block mainly favors companies that make cheap profits from child labor, forced labor or environmentally harmful production. Thousands of small and medium-sized companies in Austria that already operate in a socially and ecologically sustainable way would benefit from a supply chain law,” said Leichtfried. (End) ah/up
