‘It’s disturbing and hurtful’: The creators of The Last Of Us reveal why they decided to film THIS kissing scene in Episode 2
The creators of The Last Of Us opened up about the stomach-churning kissing scene that got viewers talking in episode two.
The show focuses on the parasitic Cordyceps fungus — which tends to infect insects — which evolves to control the human race and is “real,” according to showrunner Craig Mazin.
The second episode introduced viewers to the “clickers,” people who have become so infected with the fungus that they are no longer recognizable as humans.

The episode ended with Tess (Anna Torv) sacrificing herself to save Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey).
Having already become infected, Tess doused a building with gasoline and lured the infected to her, allowing the other two to escape.
Just as she lit the flame, onlookers watched as one of the walkers leaned down and kissed her, his tendrils going into her mouth.
The Last Of Us creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin discussed the scene with Variety, who called it “disturbing”.

Mazin said, “We’ve already talked about tendrils coming out, and we’ve asked these philosophical questions: ‘Why are infected people violent? If it’s spreading the fungus, why do they have to be violent?’ We landed on the fact that they don’t.
“They are violent because we resist, but what if you don’t? What does it look like when you just stand perfectly still and let her do this to you?
“Then we ended up on this nightmare fuel. It’s disturbing and hurtful. I think it’s very primal how it enters your own body. To use an overused word, it’s triggering.”
The show changed the plot of the video game where Anna was killed by soldiers.

It takes someone over a decade to reach the fourth stage of infection, where they develop hardened fungal plates, release infectious spores, and become increasingly difficult to kill.
The Last of Us also stars Nick Offerman, Melanie Lynskey, Storm Reid, Gabriel Luna and Merle Dandridge.

The Last of Us is an adaptation of Naughty Dog’s 2013 best-selling motion capture video game of the same name, which appears to have been heavily inspired by AMC’s The Walking Dead and Alfonso Cuarón’s 2006 film Children of Men.
