Three seriously injured in explosion in public toilet

The spray cans may have exploded. The course of events is still unclear, parts of the historic building in the city center of Halle an der Saale, where the toilet is located, were seriously damaged.

In a public toilet in the German city of Halle an der Saale (Saxony-Anhalt), a strange and important incident took place on Wednesday night. In the bathroom area, which is in the historic “Marktschlößchen” in the city center, there was a large explosion in which two girls (12 and 13 years old) and a 51-year-old man were seriously injured. The explosion is likely in assigned deodorant spray bottles, which may have been ignited in some way, police later said.

The explosion took place around 6pm in the public bathroom of the late Renaissance residential and commercial building, which also houses the tourist information office. Apparently there was also major damage, even a structural engineer was called in for this reason. Whether it was deodorant bottles provided there (keyword: room spray) or ones someone had brought with them was as unclear from previous reports as the identity of the three injured people.

Forensic investigations into the cause continued on Wednesday. Police had already ruled out a gas accident on Tuesday night. In fact, it was a tragic accident.
