Trump’s Truth Social is a ‘right-wing echo chamber’, says Elon Musk: ‘Might as well call it a trumpet’

Amid renewed plans to buy Twitter, Tesla CEO Elon Musk fired a shot at Donald Trump’s social media platform Truth Social, calling it a “right-wing echo chamber” in an interview with the Financial Times.

“It might as well be called a trumpet,” Musk said.

Musk said that Truth Social suggests that social media is fragmenting into various politically charged silos. His comments echo earlier ones he made last summer against Twitter’s decision to ban Donald Trump after the Jan. 6 Capitol riot because his tweets incited violence.

“I don’t think it was right to ban Donald Trump. I think that was a mistake because it alienated a large part of the country and didn’t result in Donald Trump having no voice,” Musk said at the time.

Musk has spent the last few months in a legal battle with Twitter after backing out of plans to acquire the social media platform over claims Twitter hadn’t done enough to delete bot accounts on the site. Now, less than two weeks before Musk and Twitter were due to face trial over the rejected deal, Musk is again offering to buy the site for $44 billion, the same suggested price originally offered in April.

“I don’t do Twitter for the money. It’s not like I’m trying to buy a yacht and I can’t afford it,” Musk told the Financial Times. “I don’t own boats. But I think it’s important that people have the most trusted and inclusive means of sharing ideas possible, and that it should be as trustworthy and transparent as possible.”

While a judge delayed the trial over the new proposal, Musk gave until Oct. 28 to finalize the deal. But Twitter says they can’t trust the billionaire’s offer to be in good faith, calling Musk’s offer an “invitation to further mischief and delay” in new court filings Thursday.

“Well, on the eve of the trial, [Musk] explained [he] to intend[s] but close. ‘Trust us,’ they say, ‘we mean business this time,’ and that’s why they’re asking to be absolved of a settlement in the main,” the filing written by Twitter’s attorneys said.

Meanwhile, Truth Social has had some difficulties. Last month, investors pulled $138.5 million from the blank check company linked to Trump’s social media platform and Digital World Acquisition Corp., which was set to deliver $1.3 billion to the former Helping President take over Twitter has changed his address to a PO Box at a UPS store.

The change of address came with the same disclosure that investors had pulled money out of the company, which was generally disappointed after attracting far fewer users than hoped.
