Two bodies recovered on the tourist island of Mallorca

Following the disappearance of two German sailors in the Mediterranean a week and a half ago, two bodies were found on the east coast of Mallorca. According to the police, it was initially unknown whether they were the 53-year-old father and 19-year-old son, who had been missing since August 27th. As the two dead people can no longer be identified visually, a DNA analysis was requested in both cases, he said.

A dead man wore only swimming trunks

The result should be available in two to three weeks, a spokesman said at the request of the German Press Agency on Tuesday. Passers-by discovered the first body on Sunday night near Cala Morlanda. However, the sea was so turbulent that the police were only able to recover the body the following day in Cala Falcó, almost ten kilometers further south. The person was only wearing swimming trunks. The second body was located on Monday night in Porto Cristo, which is between Cala Morlanda and Cala Falcó. There, too, the high waves made the rescue difficult, which was only achieved on Tuesday. Police said there was a possibility that the bodies recovered were those of German sailors.

The two sailors left Menorca on Sunday of the week before last. Despite the warning of bad weather, they intended to travel from Cala Galdana to Cala d’Or in Mallorca, around 90 kilometers away, on the nine meter long sailboat “Makan Angin”, registered in Frankfurt. The relatives last had contact with them in the morning of that day and alerted the police when they had not heard from them until the evening. The bodies were found en route to the planned destination port. A large-scale sea rescue search by ships and air, sometimes supported by French forces, was unsuccessful.
