Queen Cleopatra is one of the newest series/documentaries on streaming platform Netflix which premiered on May 10, 2023.

The controversy surrounding this new Netflix bet began shortly after it was revealed that Cleopatra would be played by a black actress, Adele James, which didn’t go over well given Cleopatra is of Greek descent.

The controversy even reached Egyptian government officials, as a lawsuit was pending against Netflix by an Egyptian lawyer, as the documentary misrepresented the history of Egypt since, as mentioned above, Cleopatra was not black but of Greek descent.

Several Egyptian historians protested the documentary, even calling on the Egyptian government to ban Netflix from the country.

This controversy has not been indifferent to both the specialist critics and the audience/public. Netflix’s Queen Cleopatra is getting very negative feedback on multiple platforms, from Metacritic, Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb.

At the time of writing, Queen Cleopatra has a rating of 1.2/10 on IMDb, 45/100 from critics and 0.2/5 from viewers on Metacritic, and only 17% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Strangely, we have very few reviews across all platforms, and in the case of Rotten Tomatoes, it’s hard to understand why there aren’t any public reviews yet.
