US plane pilot threatens to fall into supermarket before landing

The situation put authorities and services in Mississippi on alert for several hours.

The pilot of a small twin-engine plane threatened to crash into a supermarket in Mississippi, southern United States, for several hours on Saturday before finally landing and being arrested, local authorities said.

Around 5 a.m. local time, Tupelo police were notified that the pilot of a plane was flying over the town of nearly 38,000 people, they said on their Facebook page.

“The pilot has contacted emergency services and is threatening to intentionally crash into a Wal-Mart,” the statement said, without specifying the pilot’s motivations.

A “dangerous” situation

The plane eventually landed five hours later and the pilot was taken into custody, the Benton County Sheriff’s Office, about an hour’s drive from Tupelo, told AFP.

According to flight-tracking site FlightAware, the plane was a Beechcraft King Air 90, a nearly 35-foot-long aircraft with a wingspan of just over 50 feet.

Mississippi emergency services have been on alert throughout the morning over the situation, which has been described as “dangerous” by Tupelo Police, who have urged residents to avoid the area.
