VAR in League 1: how much would it cost to implement video arbitration in Peru for each game?

VAR in League 1 how much would it cost to

Augustine Losano announced on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Peruvian Football Federation (FPF) that Peruvian football will see many changes. One of them will be the implementation of VAR in League 1, which raised many doubts. However, one of the most striking is how much would it cost to implement it in Peru?

We take the Uruguay First Division championship as a reference, where the cost per game is $4,000 according to the Uruguayan Football Confederation (AUF).

If we approximate it to the Peruvian tournament, the price of the video arbitration in the 345 games of League 1 would be $1,380,000, which would be 5,313,000 soles at the local currency exchange rate.

Peruvian referees are trained in dealing with the VAR

In an interview with RPP, the president of the federation’s organizing committee and competitions, Lander Aleman, gave details of the start of the training that Peruvian referees will receive regarding the use of VAR.

“From September, the training for the referees, who see the management of the VAR, will begin,” said Alemann. He also recalled the time when this technology was only used in national football: “The VAR 2019 was somewhat provisional. What is happening now is the planning and seriousness that FIFA demands.”

When was VAR used in League 1?

The first and only time VAR was used in the Peruvian tournament was in Liga 1 2019, when Alianza Lima and Deportivo Binacional met at Guillermo Briceño Stadium, ending in the locals’ controversial 4-1 win in the first leg and in the second leg with a blue and white victory (2:0).
