Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic has denounced the holding of next Sunday’s municipal elections in northern Kosovo, named after the flagship party of majority Kosovars, as “a terrible day for democracy” and “a moment of shame” for Europe’s Serb community in the region, Lista Serbia, will announce its withdrawal from the institutions.
List Serbia, and practically more broadly the Kosovar Serbs, have announced a boycott of these elections, in a new episode of rising tensions that have seen northern Kosovo since the middle of last year, the scene of a registration crisis followed by the erection of barricades against the Kosovar government in protest of the , which Belgrade describes as persecution carried out by the security forces and the institutions of Kosovo, where Kosovar Albanians are the majority.
“Sunday will be a day when Europe and the world will be ashamed,” stated Vucic, who again called for the immediate declaration of North Kosovo as the so-called Community of Serb Municipalities, an autonomy status discussed in proximity talks between Serbia and Kosovo promoted by The European Union.
Kosovo’s Prime Minister Albin Kurti has urged all eligible citizens of the four municipalities in northern Kosovo to come out and cast their votes in a conciliatory gesture that was ignored by Kosovo Serb officials.
In fact, the Serbian President understands that the local elections will only serve to put the Kosovar Albanians at the head of the institutions of North Kosovo, which will be an “act of true occupation that the Kosovar Serbs will not accept”.
