The government of Malaysia is considering resuming the search for the plane Flight MH370 from Malaysia Airlines who disappeared 10 years ago en route to Beijing, China. Authorities said Sunday they cited possible collaboration with a U.S. marine research company.

Malaysian Transport Minister Loke Siew Fook said during an event with the victims' families that he would try to persuade the Cabinet to authorize the resumption of the searches.

“This is the greatest aviation secret in the world. We have to solve it,” he added.

It is assumed that the searches will be carried out under the risk system, meaning that if no trace of the aircraft is found, no payment will be made to the marine research company. Minister Loke Siew also reported that he had instructed the Ministry of Transport to invite Ocean Infinity to Malaysia to be briefed on the accident.

Remember the case

Flight MH370 disappeared from radar shortly after midnight on March 8, 2014, less than 40 minutes after takeoff from Kuala Lumpur International Airport with 239 passengers and crew.

According to satellite information, the plane is estimated to have deviated from its flight path and crashed into the southern Indian Ocean, prompting a massive international search led by Australia.

After three years, in January 2017, the search operations were ended, having spent around US$200 million (around R990 million at current prices) searching 120,000 square kilometers in one of the world's largest oceans.

In January 2018, Ocean Infinity took over operations under a “no hit, no fee” agreement and searched an additional 112,000 square kilometers, which also yielded nothing.

An independent international investigation team led by Malaysia concluded in a 2018 report that there was no way to determine the cause of the disappearance because no key information on wreckage or flight data could be examined.

During the event, families of the victims paid tribute by reciting poetry, singing and dancing, and also lit 239 candles, one for each life lost.

“We don’t want any more speculation. We want evidence and truth. Therefore, we call on the Malaysian government and relevant authorities not to stop the search but to continue searching for the truth,” said Chinese national Bai Shuan Fu, whose wife was a passenger on the flight.
