Studies conducted at North Carolina State University and Rutgers University, both in the United States, revealed surprising results. The dirtiest place in the kitchen isn’t the dishwasher, although a lot of dishes and leftovers can accumulate there.

According to the published data, the spice container is the object that accumulates the most dirt in the kitchen. If you have a place where spices are stored, it is probably the dirtiest place in the kitchen, according to scientific analysis on the subject.

Why is this the dirtiest place in the kitchen anyway?

Scientists listened to 371 volunteers to understand and find out where the dirtiest spot in the kitchen would be. Each person had to prepare a turkey pie recipe that was intentionally contaminated. Among the ingredients was a bacterium that is easy to detect and harmless to humans. The name of the microorganism is MS2. In fact, the recipe also provided for the preparation of a salad.

After all the preparations were made, the researchers analyzed the kitchen used down to the smallest detail. The aim was to find the places that have the highest amount of MS2 bacteria.

While most surfaces were no more than 20% contaminated with the analyzed agent, all spice jars used in the process showed 48% contamination. This means that almost 50% of it was taken up by the bacteria contained in the sample.

The study was published in the Journal of Food Protection. The reason for this high pollution lies in the constant use of spice containers at the beginning, during and at the end of the preparation process. However, these pots are rarely washed every time they are used. It’s not scary!
