“We need an investigation to make sure this doesn’t happen again,” said André A. Morin, former attorney general for Canada’s Quebec prosecutor’s office and Liberal candidate in Acadie.

The Journal announced today that the Mental Disorder Review Commission (CETM) released Abdulla Shaikh despite posing a “significant risk to public safety.” The individual suffered from schizophrenia but denied his illness and had a “history of non-compliance with treatment”.

Supervise well

In particular, for Mr. Morin, an investigation would make it possible to know whether the CETM has sufficient resources to adequately judge the people who appear before it.

In addition, Liberals want to ensure that the amounts allocated allow for proper monitoring once they are released into society. “Mental health is underfunded,” regrets André A. Morin.

Today the Prime Minister also requested clarification of the circumstances of Abdulla Shaikh’s release.

“I’m glad we’re rid of this person,” said François Legault at first. His firm later clarified that it was pleased the suspect was now “out of harm’s way.”

“You also have to see what happened. Since this is someone who has already been targeted, why was he released? need to tighten [les mesures] ‘ Mr. Legault continued during a brief scrum in Montreal.

Committee silence

However, the Office of the Minister of Justice ensures that it cannot intervene due to the independence of the courts.

On the Commission side, we refuse to say whether there will be an investigation or internal reviews in relation to Mr Shaikh’s release.

At the very end of the day, a communications officer emailed general facts about the CETM without answering any questions.
