According to the German Foundation for World Population (DSW), the number of people living on Earth increased last year by almost 66 million, to well over eight billion people. At the end of 2023, 8,073,859,407 people lived in the world, DSW announced today. Although the value continues to rise, this increase has been slowing down for decades, he said.
The DSW referred to United Nations figures that the relative growth of the world's population has almost halved in the last 50 years. The greatest growth occurred between 1965 and 1970.
Double in Africa by 2080
The exception is the African continent, as the organization also announced. The population is expected to double to 2.5 billion people by 2080. The persistently high population growth here is due, among other things, to inadequate sexual education in some regions, as well as often difficult access to contraceptives and a lack of gender equality.
